Always on the lookout for great or unique cakes, I was floored with the Red Velvet and Hummingbird Cake here at the Urbean, Avenue K.
Pumpkin Muffin (RM6.50).
Soft, moist yet not overly greasy, this muffin is light on the lips and hips!
Red Velvet (RM9.50)
Frosted with creamy and lovely cream cheese that’s not too cloying nor sticky, the red layers of this perennial favourite barely had any colouring added. What you see is almost (just a wee bit of colouring was mixed into the batter) just pure chocolate and buttermilk base sponge which boast of a marvellous light texture.
I definitely approve of Urbean’s version of Red Velvet since I never liked mine too dense or red.
Hummingbird Cake (RM9.50).
Moist banana sponge with chunks of pineapples embedded, this Hummingbird cake is certainly one of the best I’ve had. Another good one is at Swich, Publika.
While the one by Swich is heavier on the cream cheese, I find this version by Urbean satisfactorily heavy with bananas yet priced lower too.
Note: For those who are unfamiliar with Hummingbird cakes, Hummingbird cake is a banana pineapple cake usually frosted with cream cheese.
Moving on I discovered another great place for good cakes in Bangsar and Publika.
I have always associated Social at Bangsar and Publika to be more of a pub and a chillout serving food but I found myself here more often now that I discovered their Banana Peach Crumble!
Banana Peach Crumble (RM15.00 ++).
Chunky bananas and thick wedges of peaches literally spilling out from its crust and the most lip-smacking oat and butter crust. This is worth every ringgit paid. 
The Apple Cherry Crumble (RM15.00++) is similar but with different fruits used.
Apple Cheese Tart. (RM15.00). Not bad but it couldn’t beat our favourite Banana and Peach Crumble!
There’s more to try at Social but these are the few we had sampled for now. I’ll be back for more!
Last but not least, here’s the Pavlova. I find it too sweet for me but it was generously studded with fresh fruits (a plus point) and layered with absolutely heavenly fresh cream.
