There was one point sometime ago that I had to seek out halal outlets for an app writing assignment I had. So I went around sampling food from pork-free and halal outlets in KL and after 2 weeks I came to a conclusion; there are not many actual JAKIM certified outlets, but there are many pork-free outlets serving halal certified meats.
Siang at Sogo is one such outlet. A Chinese banquet seating style restaurant that offers Chinese food, one of their more popular offerings is the dim sum.
I find the prices pretty reasonable and the dim sum well prepared and fresh. All in all, not a bad choice for those seeking a comfortable, air conditioned environment and decent dim sum fare.
Fried Carrot Cake. RM7.00++.
Siew Mai – Pork dumplings. RM7.00++.
Steamed fishballs. RM6.00++.
Scallops Chee Cheong Fun. RM10.00++.
Fish Porridge. RM7.00++.
Steamed Yam Cake in Bowl. RM7.00++.
Mini Egg tarts. RM4.50++.
Char Siew Bao – steamed BBQ pork buns. RM6.00++.
Chilled Mango Puree with Vanilla Ice Cream. (Price – TBA).
Chilled Papaya Soup with Aloe Vera. Price TBA (let me check my receipt).
The carrot cake was nicely seasoned and adeptly fried. It wasn’t redolent of “wok hei” (wok fire aroma) but it was good nonetheless.
Fishballs are a must-order for me and the ones here fell a bit below par. But rest assured that these wasn’t the usual hard, starchy commercial ones. We did enjoy the yam cake in a bowl; dense and generously studded with yam cubes and deliciously savoury. It was rather filling too.
The steamed siew mai is plump and for RM10++ the chee cheong fun was stuffed with thick pieces of scallops though the skin was a tad starchier and thicker than how I like my rice rolls but I don’t think it warrants a complaint.
The char siew bao was decent for a fowl version and plump with meat instead of just plain dough. Both the chilled desserts ordered completed our halal dim sum experience on a good note.
Celestial Court at Sheraton Imperial remains my default choice for pork-free dim sum but this is a good alternative for those on a smaller budget.
NOTE: Last order for dim sum is at 4.00pm in the afternoon.
