Old Tricycle BBQ Yong Tau Foo, Taman Desa KL

I’m very fussy with my fishpaste for Yong Tau Fu.
It has to be soft and redolent of fish aroma, fresh and springy with genuine fish flavour and bursting with the natural sweetness of the sea. Too often we had to make do with the commercial quality, perfectly spherical machine-formed, MSG-fied and flour laden ones.

The usual Yong Tau Foo joints around hasn’t been able to satisfy my cravings. Happily enough, this Old Tricycle BBQ Yong Tau Foo came close.

The menu here offers a mix of the quintessential items and some novel variety with bacon. Another unique feature here is the DIY element of grilling your yong tau foo over a fire pit.

For large groups or for those who are too lazy to pick and choose, just grab a set like we did.

While waiting we drank from these nostalgic can mugs.
The Freezy Lime Juice (RM4.50) is expectedly refreshing. I would highly recommend the BeanCurd Barley (mix of soya bean & barley) (RM4.50) as it was unmistakably home-made. I savour the freshness and aroma of soya beans in every sip.

Our medium set came served in a woven round tray, again another nostalgic element with the items placed in individual round colour rimmed tin plates. It was as if I was having dinner at my grandparents’ home again, where similar utensils are used at every meal.
Though there is a touch of modernisation with the concept of barbecuing your yong tau foo, Old Tricycle BBQ Yong Tau Foo strikes a balance between the present while simultaneously preserving traditions with details such as these.

Our 25 pieces set includes some precooked yong tau foo as well as raw ones. These are for the grill. A bowl of clear sweet soup with dumplings and fishballs and a separate plate of fried foo pei (beancurd skin) plus wantan are part of the set as well.
Only the Curry pigskin cheong fun was an additional order at RM3.90.

Both the yong tau foo in the soup and the fried ones were good. I don’t eat the fried ones much but I could tell that it was too greasy.

The Chee Cheong Fun (rice rolls) slide down the throat easily and the pig skin curry was delicious. If you need something more substantial (read: carbs) then the chee cheong fun is a good choice.

The fun is the barbecuing action, though I had to admit that I didn’t do any. Well, that’s what food buddies (the men) are for right? :P

Hmm..yummy bites (we should glamour-ize our yong tau foo and start calling them chinese tapas perhaps?), fresh and with smoky char. Some are wrapped in bacon. What’s not to like?

I certainly won’t mind re-visiting again. Food is good, prices are decent and the eating experience is relaxing. Ideal for a chill-out evening (it’s only open from 6pm onwards) or the weekends!
